Opinion - Instructions

If you're like me, you probably got your first LEGO set at the age of about five and spend days trying to figure out how it goes together. By seven you started to get the hang of things, and by eight a hundred dollar set was a hundred minute job. What do all three stages have in common? Instructions. When you buy a LEGO kit you usually want to follow the instructions and build whatever it is you bought. And that's fine; its fun, and it comes out looking great. What I can't stand (that's not the phrase, more like "dislike") is people (Bryce, just to name one) who build NXT projects from other people's instructions. To me, that's not satisfying. Robotics and engineering are about designing your own models, not copying other peoples models centimeter by centimeter. Now, I'm not saying copying ideas is wrong, quite the contrary, actually. Copying ideas is what keeps people going, it helps people succeed. I just think that copying a model exactly as it was is wrong, especially if you try to take credit for it. 1. I think Instructions have a purpose. But they shouldn't be the only way people build.

Many times, instructions help you learn something. Or spark ideas. But if you don't expand on those methods and ideas, you aren't really learning. You're just copying.
